How to mentally prepare and stay confident

For any type of athletic endeavor but especially in individual sports it is important to keep mental preparation and confidence levels high. When training in Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, boxing etc. it remains the pinnacle of every athletes game to maintain a good work ethic and a sureness in one’s abilities. However, although this sounds easy, it is one of the most difficult aspects to any individual’s training. Here are a few things to remember:

1. Self talk:
This is extremely powerful and meaningful as what we say to ourselves affects how we act. Our moods, emotions, motivations, confidence, health and so on are all unconsciously affected by the self-prophetic conversations we have within ourselves. To phrase it another way, who is more influential to you than yourself? Nobody. So be sure that you treat yourself in an uplifting manner with respect. Use words like “strong”, “capable”, “intelligent”, and “successful” to describe your character and avoid placing any negative emphasis on failures or faults.

2. Positivity and question rephrasing:
Be sure that if you make a mistake, have an off day or discover a weakness that you don’t place blame or question your abilities or capability to cope. Instead of asking yourself something like, “why am I so stupid to keep getting caught in that position?” ask, “How can I help myself to avoid this same thing from happening?” or, “What did I learn from making this mistake?”. Doing something as simple as this will help keep you mentally strong and confident as well as possibly help to illuminate any strengths or learning points for you to target.

3. Visualization:
Try to put yourself in any situation in which you may have to face adversity and see positive results spawning from the experience in accordance with whatever your goals are. Whether it’s practice, a match, a job interview or meeting with the in-laws visualize something positive as a result; like perfecting a new move, defeating the opponent, getting the job, or enjoying the company of your spouse’s parents.

4. Relaxation:
This can come from positive meditative visualization and controlled breathing. The more you “visit” a certain environment and can relax while in it, the more relaxed you will be when you actually find yourself there. The more clam you can be the higher the level of performance and thinking you can reach. On this same thought though, don’t let yourself become so relaxed you are slow or sleepy.

5. Distractions and living in the moment:
This is the most cliche statement but you have to live in the moment and can’t let yourself be distracted by random creeping thoughts. To feel totally immersed in something is a weightless and almost euphoric feeling that will result when you become only focused on completing the task at hand. There is no sure way to achieve this, however, if you actively remind yourself to stay in the moment and give a concerted effort to focus entirely on the what is happening right before you it is totally possible. With practice you will get better too, so don’t give up, its worth it.

6. Controlling your emotions:
No matter what you are feeling, be it stress, fear, anger, you cannot under any circumstances let your emotions run rampant. This will only be achieved if you are in tune with yourself enough to pinpoint how you are feeling and the reasoning behind the emotion. Then you can desensitize yourself to the raw, animalistic, instinctual being you have become and make clear headed, logical decisions instead of wild and out of control emotional ones.

7. Positive recall:
Part of self talk, this is when you look back to experiences or times when you have been successful and have done well. Really try to focus on how you felt not only emotionally but physically in your times of victory and transfer these feeling to your present self. This will help raise confidence and mental toughness by providing you with positive content for proof of your abilities.

A final note:
Having a good gym with good people to surround you and a strong instructor staff takes some of the burden of staying motivated and confident off of you and disperses it to your family and teammates in the gym. You are not alone, let others lean on you and they will reciprocate in the future. Helping others and bonding with those around you is what its all about.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

To a practitioner this is a complicated question that goes beyond just the movements. It is the ability to use technique to overcome unexpected adversity. At its heart and in its purest form, the art of Jiu Jitsu is about feeling comfortable enough to survive in unexpected situations. It is about fighting and controlling heavier men, about being able to survive and thrive for an hour or longer, it is not about playing to win but not allowing yourself to lose. At its base, it is the fight to not get tired, to not waste energy, to not make mistakes and to become more prepared for life. It should be made clear that UFC and sport fighting with its incorporation of Jiu Jitsu has been adapted for those arenas specifically. In these settings, the art is lost to athleticism and opportunity and technicality to strength. This is where we see the significant difference between the two grappling sports of Jiu Jitsu and wrestling arise, as wrestling is very much about strength, explosion and gross motor movement. On the other hand, it is also important to note that Jiu Jitsu takes a long time to master and also relies heavily on ground technique to win fights. In the context of a self defense encounter, wrestling can hold two distinct advantages, it doesn’t require a tremendous amount of technique and is also an effective measure to keep a fight standing. No matter what the situation though, a good mixture of both styles of grappling is exactly what you want because they both have their strengths. To wrap up, whether you are new to Jiu Jitsu or not, it is good to remember that competitiveness and emotion are more you than the art. Try to eliminate the ego and learn the art and technique before you begin to use your strength and athleticism and this will be the ultimate display of Jiu Jitsu wisdom.

How to choose an MMA gym

Choosing a new gym for either your own personal development or that of your child’s is like investing in a new home, it requires the right balance of feeling comfortable and making sure you get what you pay for. Whatever your goals are you should keep in mind a few rules of thumb in order to pick the right setting that will nurture the greatest gains; these are:

1. Size of the gym:
There is a common misconception that the bigger the gym the better. While this may hold true in some areas, it is important to remember that often times newcomers are only appreciated in the first few weeks and then neglected for the pro fighters. the facilities or other new people being courted in. So, don’t be fooled by some big names or flashy equipment, depending on your goals an skill level it could very well be more effective for you to pick an up incoming gym with hungry, friendly and personable instructors that will not alienate you.

2. Cleanliness of the space:
No matter the size of the gym, no matter what, the floor, mats, bathrooms, bags etc. should be clean and in order. You don’t want to be training in a place that looks like somebody’s garage. Keep it clean.

3. Asking questions:
If the gym is legitimate, the instructors should be willing and able to answer any questions you have in a friendly matter-of-fact fashion.

4. Credentials of the instructors:
Who are the instructors? Make sure they’ve got names faces and the credentials to back them up. Also, keep in mind, if you are new you don’t necessarily need the best MMA fighter or Jiu Jitsu practitioner in the world as your instructor more than someone you connect with and is a good teacher.  Also, there will be assistant instructors as well and they don’t necessarily have to have a great deal of experience as long as they can explain techniques and lead the classes.

5. Pricing:
Paying more doesn’t always mean that you will receive a higher quality or better training experience. Generally however, just like with food, if you spend too little you will probably receive a lower caliber or substandard training environment. Prices for a reputable gym will usually run from $125.00 to $250.00 a month.

6. Who trains there:
Be sure to watch carefully how people interact with each other. Many gyms can feel cliquey or exclusive and this can be unwelcoming. As well, some gyms are simply put, “fight gyms”, where you find a litany of pro fighters mixed in with tough guys who are overly competitive. Its very important and often a difficult task for a gym owner to separate the fighters from the other students but if this is not done properly the gym should not be deemed a safe environment for a new student. If on the other hand you see many people in the gym talking, laughing and instructing each other this can provide a clue of how you will be treated and accepted in a similar manner.

7. Define and be honest about your goals:
This is simple but probably the most difficult aspects of choosing the right gym. Try to eliminate any ego you have about your level of expertise as well as athleticism in order to help the instructors help you achieve realistic goals and develop yourself in the best possible way.

8. Use the free trial:
Just like when buying a new car, it is important to take a “test drive” of the gym you have chosen before you jump headlong into a contract. Use the free time the owners have supplied for you to continue to get to know the environment and instructors to make sure this is the place for you.

9. Mixed Martial Arts:
The gym should offer training in striking arts like Muay Thai and or Boxing as well as grappling arts like Brazilian jiu jitsu and Wrestling

10. Self Defense:
Be sure also that the gym’s instructors emphasize the use of the skills you are learning situations not just sports arenas.

11. Curriculum:
This is a legitimacy inquiry. Make sure that the gym you have chosen has a written and planned out curriculum for its classes.
